Yarrow has been used by many cultures for hundreds of years. The genus name Achillea may have been derived from the Achilles of Greek mythology, who was said to have his wounds healed by the use of this herb. The ancient Europeans called it Herba Militaris, the military herb as an ointment made was used as a remedy to stop bleeding on battle wounds. Its species name, millefolium literally means “thousand leaved” and does indeed represent the foliage of Yarrow.

Yarrow grows along roadsides, in fields and waste areas, in the bottoms of canyons and lawns. It grows on almost every continent of the world. The stem of the Yarrow plant is fern-like and aromatic with a bunch of tiny, white flowers on the top of the stem.

Yarrow is traditionally by MicMac nation used to help the body to deal with fevers and colds and wound healing. People of the Algonquin and Quebec nations use it internally to treat colds and other respiratory disorders. It is traditionally used as a urinary cleanser and can  also be used as a gentle relaxant and to induce sweating and to stop nosebleeds. Traditionally used to tone and aid veins and capillaries.

Properties: 

Yarrow has a strong aroma like Licorice and a sweet flavour but a somewhat bitter and astringent finish. Yarrow has an affinity for the circulatory system and the blood vessels, helping to tone the circulatory system. Also has an astringent effect on tissues and blood vessels. The volatile oils in Yarrow are antiseptic in the kidneys and bladder, making in useful for urinary tract infections. 

For fevers combine with Elderflower, Peppermint, Boneset and Ginger. To help with blood pressure can be combined with Hawthorn, Linden and Motherwort.

How to use:

1-2 teaspoon of Yarrow to one cup of boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.

A stronger tea may be made and added to the bath to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Cautions & contraindications:

Not recommended during pregnancy. Large doses may cause headache.
