Star Anise is the fruit of a tree in the magnolia family, native to China and Vietnam. The fruit is brown and very tough skinned and generally picked before ripe. The Star pods are much stronger in Licorice flavour than Anise which is native to Europe. The pods look like an eight pointed star and are very aromatic.
The history of Star Anise dates back to 100 BC, where it was used as a staple in cooking. The seed can take 15 years to produce the pods. Star Anise is used in culinary applications and is one of the ingredients of Chinese Five Spice blend. Common names used are Takkola and Chinese Star Anise. Ground Star Anise is also a common spice in Indian cuisine, where it has been used in Chai and the spice blend called Garam Masala.
Properties:
The pods are hot, pungent and bitter. They can be infused, added to mulled wine, tinctures, added to syrups or added to mouthwashes. Has long been used for flavouring of liqueurs.
Star Anise has a warming effect and is thought to help relax and calm digestion. It is also thought to be effective in for respiratory uses. Also thought to be helpful for immunity. Star Anise is rich is antioxidants and vitamins A and C which can be helpful in diabetes and early aging of the body. It may help to reduce bloating, indigestion and may help with constipation.
How to use :
Bring water to a boil and add two pods per cup of water. Steep for 15 minutes. And then strain. May also be ground into a powder for use in cooking.
