Schizandra, also known as Magnolia vine due to its ability to grow upwards in a creeping fashion, is a native to Northern China, Russia and parts of Korea. An ornamental plant found in many fine gardens throughout the world, Schizandra is a woody vine with oval pink leaves and bright red Berries. The most popular use can be recorded in China and Russia.

Schisandra chinensis, a member of the Schisandraceae family, is referred to by various common names including Magnolia Berry and Five-Flavour-Fruit. Its Chinese name is Wu-Wei-Zi, which means “five taste fruit” because it possesses the 5 tastes in Traditional Chinese Medicine: sour, sweet, bitter, warm and salty. 

It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine  These five tastes are thought to give insight into what imbalances a person may have within their body depending on what taste they experience first. Having a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the folklore says that Schisandra can “calm the heart and quiet the spirit”.

Properties:

Traditionally used to protect the liver and help with chronic fatigue related to inflammation and oxidative stress, along with promoting vitality and increasing memory while providing stress relief. 

Combines well with Siberian Ginseng, Reishi and Ashwaghanda for adrenal support. 

How to use:

1-2 teaspoon of Schizandra to one cup of boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.
