Nutmeg is from a tropical evergreen tree that is native to the Moluccus, or Spice Islands, of Indonesia and is principally cultivated there and in the West Indies. Commonly used by the ancient Greeks and Romans as a brain tonic, it was also known as an aphrodisiac and brain stimulant. The essential oil is extracted from the fruit and seeds by steam distillation.
