Neroli oil is an essential oil is produced from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium), which is an evergreen tree in the Rutaceae family which includes which includes other citrus fruit and flowering plants with a strong scent. The bitter orange tree produces three different essential oils, Bitter orange oil from the peel of the fruit, petitgrain oil from the pressed leaves, and neroli oil from the blossoms. Which are picked by hand carefully so as not to bruise the flowers and release the oils. It takes approximately 100 lbs of blossoms to produce 1 lb of neroli essential oil.
It is believed that the bitter orange tree was first discovered in southeast Asia and then spread to India, Burma, and China. When traders eventually discovered the benefits of the tree, they brought it to Africa, Arabia, and the Mediterranean. Neroli bigarade is produced in the south of France, Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, Haiti, Guinea, Comoro Islands and Algeria. Tunisia is the largest producer followed by Morocco.
Neroli oil has been used since the days of the ancient Egyptians when it was recognized for its health and spiritual properties. In Ancient Egypt priests and priestesses used the oil in the same way incense is used in churches today. Neroli is widely believed to have been named during the 16th century for Princess Anne Maria de La Tremoille of Nerola, Italy. She fell in love with the fragrance and used it to perfume her gloves and bath and eventually introduced the fragrance to her homeland. Since then, the term “neroli” has been used to describe this essential oil. Neroli essential oil is has been used to reduce inflammation, alleviate stress, stimulate circulation, and enhance mood. Neroli oil emits a rich, floral scent, with citrusy overtones. It’s used as a base note in perfumes and scented products.
Blends well with: Myrrh, Lemon, Orange, Chamomile, Coriander, Geranium, Clary Sage, Lavender, Rose and Ylang Ylang.
