Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) – Dried Herb, Organic

Plantain, also known as Snakeweed, White Man’s Foot, or Ribwort, is a perennial weed found almost anywhere: cultivated pastures, cracks in sidewalks, backyard lawns, gardens and any place that experiences regular activity. Plantain propagates through seeds.

Plantain is a member of the Plantaginaceae family. Two common Plantain species are used in western herbal medicine interchangeably: Plantago lanceolata (the narrowleaf) and Plantago major (the broadleaf). Narrowleaf Plantain has 3-5 prominent veins through its long, narrow, lanceolate leaves. Broadleaf Plantain has 5-9 prominent veins through its wide, oval-shaped leaves. Native to temperate Eurasia and the British Isles, Plantain eventually spread across the Americas and to Australia.

Plantain has a rich history of use in traditional medicine as well as being consumed as an edible food in salads and soups. Traditionally, the Plantain Leaf was chewed or bruised then placed on the skin to draw out toxins of venomous snake or spider bites. This same method was also applied for splinters, small cuts, bruises and non-poisonous bites. Plantain was also used to help heal infections in the body, specifically thrush and infected gums. It was valued for its aid in soothing irritation in the respiratory tract by slightly moistening the mucous membranes.

Properties: 

The taste and energetics of Plantain are bland, slightly bitter, cooling, moistening and tightening. Plantain has an affinity for internal tissues such as the mouth, gums, lungs, kidneys, bladder and intestines as well as external skin. Combine Plantain with Mullein for supporting the respiratory tract. Combine Plantain with Nettle for supporting the urinary tract. Combine Plantain with Comfrey to soothe skin abrasions.

How to use:

1 teaspoon of Plantain to one cup of boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.

For topical use, make an infused oil or salve and apply directly to the affected area.

Cautions & contraindications:

Avoid taking large doses of Plantain internally if taking prescribed blood thinner medication.
