Linden, also called the Small Leaf Lime or Basswood tree, belongs to the Tiliaceae plant family. It is found in both Europe and North America. Linden is slow-growing but a long-living tree — some trees live 150 or up to 300 years. Today, there are almost 80 cultivated varieties sold. Linden trees are a beneficial plant for the urban landscape as they tolerate a wide range of conditions and will resist pollution that often kills or stunts other trees.

Linden infusions have been called the “nectar of kings” since ancient times due to their powerful health benefits. There are many folk tales across the globe, from Celtic, Roman,  German to Polish folklore. Most of the stories have to do with truth, protection and love.

In mythology the Linden tree is a symbol of peace, truth and justice. According to German folklore, it was not possible to tell a lie while standing under the Linden tree. Consequently Germans often met under the tree where they held their justice cases and marriage ceremonies.

The Leaf and Flower are often used together to make teas and tinctures with a regard for the nervous system. Flowers were historically used to soothe nerves, working to sedate those that are overstimulated, and to treat health problems associated with anxiety. The Flowers were steeped as a tea to relieve anxiety related to indigestion, irregular heartbeat and vomiting.
